Why was the data set created?

The landmark database was generated for the ATIS application used by the Regional Automated Trip Planning group (RATP). This group assists Metro bus riders to get from one location to another taking the best route possible. Landmarks are often used to determine the origin and destination of trips instead of addresses. Used to support Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) route announcement requirements.
